Business Cards Are A Must
Date: 04/01/2015In spite of the present electronic world, the use of business cards is not out of style. An article in the March 14th issue of The Economist discussed the widespread use of the cards. The article mentioned the almost ceremonial presentation of business cards when you meet someone in Japan and how that practice has now spread to China. The cards are used in Europe as well, and in just about every country, including the United States.
Those of you who are in purchasing know that salespeople routinely present their calling cards. If they don’t have one you may rightly feel that they are not very professional, or they may be at a very low level, or have more of a technical background and not be very familiar with common business practices.
If you are in a job that seldom meet outsiders, you may not feel that your own card is necessary even though the printing cost of obtaining one is inconsequential. We advise against such frugality and believe you will be more respected if you present your own card as the infrequent occasion happens.
Companies of all sizes provide cards to their personnel who deal with outsiders. Their cards have a design approved by whoever is in charge of the corporate image. The corporate name and logo is included along with the individual’s name and title, phone number, and email address. Some cards may have multi-color printing and may include additional information.
Executives usually have more conservative looking cards, but may be engraved. The designs use the same colors, logos, and design features as the company stationery.
Cards are needed when meeting someone in person, especially if you are traveling to a foreign country. Live personal contact is the best way to establish important relationships with your suppliers. It beats the cold emails everytime. Your card will be retained and remind the recipient of your meeting, your looks, and any discussions.
